Bio

Eliza Wagener’s paintings begin with a thick layer of gesso on canvas, over which she introduces figures using ink layered with oil paint which she waters down with her brush to create transparency. Her encounters with human gestures form the foundation for the interactions between her figures, which then evolve intuitively and through chance, fostering an almost unsettling atmosphere filled with uncertainties surrounding the identities of the depicted bodies. There is a tension between the question of the personalisation of the figures and the understanding of them as universally valid, non-individualised gestures, as the translucent bodies interact with each other lingering on the canvas, raising questions about the temporality, or timelessness, of her compositions.
