Joep van Liefland’s artistic practice has been strongly linked to an exploration of technology since its early beginnings. Being part of a generation that could observe the conversion from the analogue to the digital age fuels his critical engagement with the artifacts and images of our culture, the rapid developments of technology supplying him with endless means for his investigations of the electronic spectacle.
For more than two decades, van Liefland has probed his subject matter in various forms, working with painting, sculpture, assemblage, and installation. His archive of archaic technology such as remote controls, cables, televisions, manuals, and screens serve as the basis for many of his works, which monumentalize the various ways of storing and distributing information in the form of silk screen paintings of old video cassettes or bronze sculptures of cassettes stacked together.
For Liste 2024, Galerie Noah Klink presents new works from Joep van Liefland. In his ongoing RGB series of silkscreen paintings since 2018, van Liefland explores the RGB color spectrum, which is the standard for the display of images on electronic systems -such as mobile phones, computers, and television screens- where the superimposition of the primary colors red, green, and blue produces every color imaginable. The RGB series is a sequel to earlier painting series by the artist that deals with the electronic screen, such as the 'white noise' and 'blue screen' series.
For the presentation, the walls of the booth have been transformed into a green screen, which serves as a backdrop for the RGB works. As the viewers enter an oscillating, immersive sphere of transit, one ought to inquire about the nature of color and light. Or as Aaron Moulton has put it: “You can stare forever into this representation of light, this filter for consciousness, always looking to see.”
