Closed Caption Books by Irina Jasnowski Pascual
In this edition of MEDIA, we take a closer look at the work of Irina Jasnowski Pascual. In particular, we draw insights from her self-published, single-copy books, which function as an ongoing archive of her artistic process. The nature of the book format, with its front and back cover and imposed linearity, gives form to an otherwise formless, open-ended process – the perpetual in-progress churn of the studio.
Jasnowski Pascual uses these books as a working tool, propelled by a desire to create an organizational system where there is none. They consolidate and ferment a continuous flow of ideas without regard for how those ideas might be formulated into a finished product. The books are a place for any and all observation, documentation of realized projects, scripts or plans for unrealized works, as well as writings and works by other artists. All images, words, scraps or drawings are treated as equals, in an attempt for trains of thought to develop horizontally, through time, without hierarchy. The two-page layout inherent to the book format creates juxtapositions and associations which inform and mimic the artist's thought process.
Seen together, the books offer a direct view into the artist’s way of observing and collecting. They reveal how intuition, reflection and material experiment come together long before a work takes its final form.
